February is on its way out, so I am starting to think about what we are going to be doing for the upcoming month. It seems wild to be thinking about March already, but it is just a few days away. Here are some of the things that I pulled to get ready for St. Patrick's Day. Area Houses These area houses make a great craft during my small group time. It really is "Print and Go," even though it looks like it might involve some prep. You can read more about … [Read more...]
Finding Area: A Real World Craft
We are finishing up our math unit on Area this week. That means that it's time to get crafting!! My class LOVES this area activity. I copy the rooms on brightly colored paper (Go Astrobrights!) and cut them on a paper cutter. Then they get to start planning their house floor plans! We talk about what would make sense as a floor plan...ex. Rooms need to connect, do you need a hallway?, where might you put a bathroom? It is really fun to see them make their … [Read more...]
Informational Writing that Kids Look Forward To
We are deep into informational writing and my students have already worked their way through one informational piece, start to finish. Sometimes this is where I feel the RESISTANCE. They "don't wanna do another one....." and you can see the annoyance on their face. A few years ago, we decided that we needed to get them hooked into their second writing piece in an authentic way. We decided to pair it with a mini-research project. During our reading block, we … [Read more...]
Fitting It All In: Reading Skills
Reading Skills. There are a LOT of them. Sometimes it seems like when you focus on one skill, your students forget about the other ones! A few years ago we were deep in the throes of MAIN IDEA and Supporting Details. A question popped up about THEME and my class looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language! This was so painful because we had spent weeks on THEME in a previous unit! We need to spiral back to skills many times before they are truly … [Read more...]
Solving Equation Practice: Winter 3D Craft
Happy Sunday! I just wanted to quickly share a new math craft that I plan to put out for my fast finishers in math this week. As I shared here, I have the kids do math rotations during our small group time. Each student is in a group and they have a different task to complete each day while I pull a group to work with. After they complete their work from the "must do" side, they can choose something from the "may do" side (you can grab these slides in our FREE … [Read more...]
Balancing Equations and Solving for Variables: 3D Valentine
We have all been there. I was there last week. My students took a mid-year math assessment on the computer. It was only practice, but as I walked around, I realized that there were a LOT of questions that involved balancing equations and solving for a variable. It wasn't that we hadn't learned the skill, because we did. It was more like we had plowed through those math lessons without a lot of independent practice. Sometimes that happens. There is a … [Read more...]
