As you know, every Monday we like to start our day off with a crafty-type project. We have found that making morning work fun and engaging really helps our students start the week with a positive attitude! I love to hear the quiet little cheers when they walk in and read the board. I hear, "It's maker's Monday! Yes!" Usually over the weekend, Stefanie and I chat to figure out a good craft-type activity for our class. The key is … [Read more...]
Point of View: Tea Stained Letters and Watercolor Picture
Every year around Thanksgiving, I love to focus on Point of View during language arts. There are so many good Thanksgiving-themed texts that students can use to put themselves in the "character's shoes." At this point in the year, we have talked about "character" and "character traits" quite a bit, so students are able to dig a little deeper into what a character might be thinking or feeling. One of my favorite text to read before Thanksgiving is "How … [Read more...]
Thanksgiving Multiplication Turkeys
I was looking for a fun way to practice multiplication in my classroom for Maker's Monday this week. I had done something similar to this Multiplication Turkey Craftivity in years past, but I decided to make it more streamlined this year. Multiplication Practice: Multiply and Draw
I am always on the look out for fun and meaningful multiplication fact practice. Today we did a "Multiply and Draw" activity and it was amazing! Don't you just love when you are working with a student, you look up, and the whole class is engaged with the activity at hand!? It makes me wish that my principal was there doing my informal observation ;) Today my students were so absorbed in their fact practice, they were almost late … [Read more...]
Revising Writing
We are nearing the end of our Personal Narrative unit. Ending the unit means that we are deep into the abyss of revising and editing. I don't know about you, but I struggle with revision for third graders. For some reason, it seems that my students are willing to change things and try strategies if they are presented with them WHILE they are writing. Once they are DONE writing, they seem so much more relucatant to change … [Read more...]
Veterans Day Agamograph
This week we will be celebrating Veterans Day. It is a great holiday and I always start the week with some reading passages so that my students can begin to understand the importance of the holiday. The week ends with an amazing celebration assembly where veterans within the community and the school come to be recognized in their full uniforms. This week for Maker's Monday, we decided to try to create a Veterans Day … [Read more...]
