This month I wanted to share some ways that I make learning fractions more fun in my classroom! I have several activities that my students love to make during our small group time. I find that the more we practice in fun ways, the better my students learn and retain fractions skills.
Real World Fraction Crafts: Fractions Greater Than One
I created these food fraction activities out of necessity! Fractions greater than one ONLY make sense if you can connect to them! How often do you have a get-together and you need to order more than one pizza? ALL.THE.TIME. In my classroom, we sit in the meeting corner and I tell them a story about ordering pizza. I use my family and the pizzas we order. I draw pictures on my chart paper and talk about who eats what. SO. SIMPLE. I wanted a craft that went along with it, so after we leave our meeting area, students are able to use these NO PREP materials to create their own REAL LIFE math scenario using PIZZA, COOKIES, or BROWNIES! YUM~
You will see the Cookie craft uses 3 wholes, the Brownine craft uses 4 wholes, and the Pizza craft uses 5 wholes. This allows you to either work your way up or differentiate to meet your students’ needs! If you think that ALL 3 would work for you, you can the bundle of all 3 of them at a discount here.
Digital Fraction Practice
Last year we had one-to-one Chromebooks, and this year we are not. I still LOVE to use our computer lab or Chromebook carts to get my students some fraction practice! I do this by using BOOM Cards. I love that they can get A LOT of practice in, in a short time….and I DON’T have to CORRECT it all! You can check out my BOOM bundle here if you think it might work in your classrom~
Introductory Fraction Craft
This fraction ice cream craft is always a MUST for us to do in our first week of FRACTIONS! It is a fun and simple way to get kids to jump into fractions. They love to name their sundaes and they make the CUTEST bulletin board.
Good Ol’Fashion Practice
I also have been using this bundle of different fraction practice sheets with my class. This is a great PRINT and GO set of sheets that cover a HUGE variety of different aspects of fractions. They are differentiated so that I am able to use them will ALL of my small groups. I am also able to use some of them with my whole class and put some out for independent workers or for homework.
FRACTION Craft FREEBIE:
This week I have a Freebie for you! It is a new activity I listed in my TPT store and I want to pass along to you. I am doing it in my classroom this week and it is a great opportunity to help my students see that Fractions Greater Than One can be named in different ways! I hope that your students enjoy it! You can get it in our FREE Resource Library!
Have a great week! I hope that this helps make teaching fractions a little bit more fun for you and your students!
