Here is your weekly Teacher Tip: Use your book order fliers for more than book orders!
If you don’t already do a classroom book order, I highly recommend doing so.
If you already do book orders, you an use the paper fliers for SO MANY THINGS! Here are some ideas:
-sort of nonfiction vs fiction
-sort realism vs fantasy
-make a reading wishlist
– circle books already read (and made book reviews)
-book crafts
-Venn Diagrams
-anything else you can think of!
I have several activities that we do every year in our reading notebooks. I usually do these activities at the beginning of the school year and it adds so much to our reading lesson. The students are really eager to chop them up!
I do a mini lesson about nonfiction vs fiction or realism vs fantasy. Then we look through the book order and choose one for each side of our T-Chart that we all agree on. Then I set them loose to start cutting on their own. I tell students not to glue anything until the end. Just cut and sort. After 5-10 minutes of cutting, we come back and have a class discussion of what they found. Then once they check with the class or with a partner, they glue everything in.
Amazing side effect: it gets them talking to their neighbors about ALL.THE.GREAT.BOOKS!
Hope this tip inspires you to keep the extra fliers our of the recycling bin and it motivates your class.
